The Reference Attorney department in the Legal business of Thomson Reuters is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. When it launched in 1985, Back to the Future and Rambo were top-grossing films. Wham!, Madonna, and Chaka Khan were on top of the Billboard charts. Much has changed since then. What hasn’t changed is the Reference Attorneys’ singular dedication to exceeding expectations.

Over the years, many Thomson Reuters lawyers have called the Reference Attorney department “home.” There’s nothing easy about the work but it is incredibly rewarding. Of course there are unique stories about reuniting lost wallets with owners based on the old Westlaw password card found within, or the time a student fell asleep in the law library and awoke in the middle of the night with no way out but the old hotline to the Reference Attorneys (pre-cell phone days).

But truly the most rewarding part of a Reference Attorney’s work is hearing a genuine thank you for the assistance, or hearing another legal professional say the Reference Attorneys helped them get home to their family at a reasonable time because of their help. One of our customers recently wrote: “Reference Attorneys are the single best part of being a Westlaw subscriber.”
