At the 2012 ABA Annual Meeting in Chicago recently, the Liberty Achievement Award was awarded to Sandra Yamate by the Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section (TIPS).

The award, sponsored by Thomson Reuters, was created in 2008 to honor lawyers and judges who promote diversity in the legal profession.

Yamate, a strong advocate for promoting diversity, currently serves as CEO of the Institute for Inclusion in the Legal Profession, the national non-profit organization that works to advance diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. She continues to be an active member in numerous organizations that promote diversity.

Yamate also creates anti-bias children’s literature through Polychrome Publishing Corporation, the only company dedicated to producing children’s books by and about Asian Americans. The publishing company was founded by Yamate and her husband, and Yamate authored the first two books: Char Siu Bao Boy and Ashok by Any Other Name.
