Blakes is the top Canadian law firm brand for the sixth consecutive year, according to the 2021 Canadian Law Firm Brand Index from Thomson Reuters. McCarthy Tétrault clinched the second spot, a position the firm has held for six years.

Osler, another consistently leading brand, came in third; last year, the firm tied for third with Norton Rose Fulbright, which took fourth place this year. Stikeman Elliott is the biggest riser in the index, up two spots to fifth place.

For only the second time in a decade, a new firm has entered the top 10: Gowling WLG. The top 10 firms remained the same for the first eight years of the index, but two new firms have joined the ranks both this year and last, breaking into a concentrated and highly competitive market where it can be difficult to achieve a distinctive brand.

Rounding out the top 10 are Torys, Fasken, Dentons and Borden Ladner Gervais (BLG).

The Canada Law Firm Brand Index reflects which firms are upper-most in clients’ minds. It measures which firms are considered most top of mind and most favored by Canadian buyers of legal services, and are most considered for top-level litigation as well as high-value and M&A work. The index is based on data compiled from a Sharplegal market research study of the global legal market across 55 countries with more than 2,000 senior in-house counsel, as well as 253 interviews conducted with senior legal buyers in Canada.
