He was a burly man, easily standing more than six feet tall, a military veteran who’d been hardened by life on the streets. Yet, there he stood, with tears streaming down his face, as he heard the voice of the twin sister he hadn’t spoken to in nearly 20 years.

This vignette is just one of many coming out of San Diego’s 2011 three -day Stand Down event, held every summer since 1988, that aims to help homeless veterans by providing showers, hot meals and assistance in applying for jobs, housing and other services.
