On Dec. 2, 2015, the Inland Regional Center was the scene of a mass shooting that left 14 people dead and 21 injured. With the suspect still at large, the San Bernardino Police Department (SBPD) had to move quickly.

The SBPD was able to identify a suspect, and they searched investigative databases for more information, including CLEAR – Thomson Reuters investigative platform for law enforcement to identify and locate individuals or organizations. The CLEAR search returned a unique address.

Within moments, undercover officers arrived at the address and saw the suspect and two accomplices leaving. After a short chase, gunfire was exchanged, which led to the deaths of the two suspects responsible for the shooting at the Inland Regional Center.

For its resourceful investigative work and bravery on Dec. 2, the SBPD was honored with the fifth annual Thomson Reuters Everyday Heroes award at a ceremony earlier this week. The Thomson Reuters Everyday Heroes award is an annual program that honors agencies and organizations that use Thomson Reuters public and proprietary records search products to make a difference in their communities.

The San Bernardino Police Department also directed a $5,000 donation, to be made on their behalf by Thomson Reuters, to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

“What happened in this community on December 2 captured the world’s attention,” said Steve Rubley, managing director for the Government business of Thomson Reuters, during the ceremony. “From the dispatchers back in command, to the SBPD Narcotics Team who were on the front line that day pursuing the suspects, these brave men and women showed all of us what it means to be a hero. For that, you deserve our gratitude.”
