Baker McKenzie retained the top spot for the 12th consecutive year in the 2022 Global Elite Law Firm Brand Index, released today by Thomson Reuters. DLA Piper remained second on the list, while Clifford Chance jumped two spots to third place.

The results reflect the value clients place on building strong relationships as well as the importance of firms’ favorability and brand awareness. The Global Elite Law Firm Brand Index score for each law firm was based on four measures: top-of-mind awareness, favorability, consideration for multi-jurisdictional litigation, and consideration for multi-jurisdictional deals.

The top firms demonstrated that their brands – and clients’ perception of their brands – are critical to firms’ ongoing success. The index results underscore the importance of which law firms come quickly to a client’s mind and which firms a client feels most drawn to. Results also illustrate the importance of law firms being able to handle a variety of legal matters in multiple jurisdictions to support their clients’ global businesses.

“It is clear that brand favorability and multi-jurisdictional deals have been the most important success factors this year for global law firm brands, out of the four that make up the index,” said Elizabeth Duffy, senior director of Global Client Services, Thomson Reuters. “We are seeing clients prioritizing specialist expertise over historical relationships or reputation.”

Rounding out the top five spots were Dentons, in fourth place, and Norton Rose Fulbright.
