Thomson Reuters today announced the rollout of Westlaw Edge Canada with CoCounsel, enabling Canadian legal professionals to complete time-consuming research tasks faster with enhanced technological capabilities and the integration of generative AI.

Westlaw Edge Canada with CoCounsel includes AI-Assisted Research, which allows for a conversational chat experience that uses generative AI to provide answers to legal questions in moments, with responses including links to supporting Westlaw authority for easy verification. In addition, Westlaw Edge Canada with CoCounsel provides access to CoCounsel – the first professional-grade generative AI assistant that streamlines tasks and entire workflows – enabling customers to deliver even more value to clients and organizations quickly and confidently.

Westlaw Edge Canada with CoCounsel streamlines the initial phase of legal research by allowing customers to ask complex questions in natural language and delivering synthesized answers with detailed insights along with a list of key cases, legislation, and topics. The launch comes on the heels of the Canadian launch of CoCounsel Core.

“We are very excited about the launch of AI-Assisted Research within Westlaw Edge Canada,” said Agathe Bujold, senior director, Clients & Markets, Research & Information at McCarthy Tétrault. “The integration of CoCounsel generative AI capabilities into Westlaw will make legal research more efficient and allow our lawyers to provide higher value service to our clients.”

The powerful combination of Westlaw Edge Canada with CoCounsel and CoCounsel Core will enable Canadian legal professionals to work more efficiently and thoroughly, and better serve clients. The tools aim to help legal professionals quickly gather deeper insights and deliver a better work product, while staying abreast of the changes and nuances of the law.

“It’s exciting to pair our legacy of quality and accuracy in legal research with the latest in innovative generative AI technology,” said Steve Assie, general manager of Global Large Law Firms and head of Canada for Thomson Reuters. “Giving Canadian customers a generative AI-enhanced version of Westlaw Edge Canada will empower them to work, think, and deliver even faster for their clients. We’re building on the premium content, editorial expertise, and performance the legal industry has come to expect from Westlaw to revolutionize thorough, fast, and accurate legal research.”

The Canadian rollout follows last year’s U.S. launch of Westlaw Precision with CoCounsel featuring AI-Assisted Research to help legal professionals quickly get answers to complex research questions.
