The Third Avenue bridge in Minneapolis will soon be renamed after one of our own: The Sharon Sayles-Belton Bridge.

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak announced Thursday that the city will renovate the landmark, Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired bridge that runs over Interstate 94 to honor the former mayor who broke down barriers and helped build the city into what it is today.

Sharon Sayles Belton, vice president of Government Affairs and Community Relations at Thomson Reuters, served as Mayor of Minneapolis from 1994-2001, and was the first woman and first African American to hold the post.
